Opened during the first week of July 2009 by Justin & Jenny Green of Ballyvolane House, O’Brien Chop House is an unpretentious eatery that offers diners traditional and robust Irish recipes in a wonderfully atmospheric old Victorian pub. All ingredients are sourced locally and served simply at very affordable prices.
O’Brien is the original name of the premises, imprinted above the main window and the term 'Chop House' has been borrowed from London’s old chop houses where you could sample a variety of chops, cutlets and steaks on the bone. At O’Brien Chop House, we always have an assortment of chops, cutlets, steaks and pies on the menu. Seafood dishes also feature including seasonal oysters and whole fish cooked on the bone.

Well, the Greywacke Estate wine dinner was a great success and we'll certainly be planning another wine dinner for later in the year. Many, many thanks to Kevin & Kimberley Judd, owners of Greywacke, for coming and for talking so eloquently and for sharing their infectious passion for their wines. Thanks also to Gerry from Liberty Wines for getting the ball rolling on this one.
Our next event will be "A Piggy Feast" - a foodie celebration of all things pork. I'll be posting the menu next week so keep an eye out for it.
For the months of February and March we are offering our guests the opportunity to "Bring Your Own Bottle" of wine on Friday evening's. We will not be charging any sort of corkage and would only ask that each person on the table has at least two-courses (to include a main course). We appreciate many people collect good wines and don't get much of an opportunity to enjoy them outside of the home. We have plenty of decanters too. Don't get used to it as it is running for a limited time only!!!
Following on from the success of the course we ran in October we will be hosting another "Nose to Tail" butchery day at Ballyvolane House on Saturday 25th February. Frank Krawczyk will again be running the course and will show you how to turn a pig into lots of yummy piggy delights like handmade sausages, bacon, chops, roasts, kassler, brawn, terrines and much more besides.
The price is €149.50 per person to include coffee and homemade biscuits on arrival, the butchery class from 9am to 5pm, lunch in the dining room at Ballyvolane House and afternoon tea and homemade lemon drizzle cake.
To book, please phone Richard Reeve on 058 53810 or email info@obrienchophousse.ie

O’Brien Chop House is open for morning coffees, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and ‘in-between time’ snacks, traditional Sunday lunch roasts and feasting menus are available for groups. Menus change with the seasons and homemade jams, relishes, chutneys and fruit cordials are also available for sale. Free Wi-Fi is also available for our customers.
The original character of the old Victorian pub has been meticulously maintained and the original snug, bar shelving, counter and stained-glass paneling are all as they were. We've simply given the place a fresh lick of paint, re-varnished the floors and tidied up the garden out back where meals may also be enjoyed.
As a member of Good Food Ireland we are committed to prioritising the core indigenous ingredients of Irish cuisine and promoting local and artisan food producers.
